Some Information About Learning Disabilities
BRAIN INPUT: Incoming Information
1. Auditory: Might have difficulty distinguishing subtle differences in letter/symbol sounds and identifying what sound(s) to listen to when there is more than one sound. May struggle to process and understand what is said.
2. Visual: Might have difficulty recognizing subtle differences in shapes. Can confuse, rotate or reverse letters or numbers (d, b, p, q, 6, 9). May skip words, skip lines, or read the same line twice. Can have difficulty with depth perception or problems with eye-hand coordination such as catching a ball, doing a puzzle, or writing.
3. Organization: Have difficulty making sense of incoming information.
4. Memory: Difficulty with storing and later retrieving this information/ “Working memory”, “Short-term memory”, “Long-term memory”.

BRAIN OUTPUT: Information communicated by means of words or muscles.
1. Expressive Language- Struggle to organize and speak thoughts or find the right words.
2. Motor- Fine motor difficulty. May have problems with coloring, cutting and writing, as well as gross motor difficulty, coordinating teams of large muscles.
Processing problems that result in LD can be a mixture of any of the above one or more of these SIX areas.
